Ulaagchiin Khar Lake – Destination Guide

Overview

  • Location: Erdenekhairkhan sum, Zavkhan province, ~110 km from Uliastai.

  • Altitude: 1,132 m above sea level.

  • Area: ~547 sq. km (official records list 574.8 sq. km).

  • Dimensions: 30 km long, 10 km wide, 48 m deep.

  • Protected Status: Part of Ulaagchiin Khar Nuur National Park (IUCN Category II, established 2010).

Natural Features

  • Emerald Waters: Clear, deep freshwater with unique bottom layers of black algae and light silt.

  • Surroundings: Sand dunes to the north, marshy steppe to the south, and the distant Tovkhish Mountain.

  • Islands: Includes Ikh and Baga Avgash islands, rising dramatically from the lake.
