Yol Gorge – Destination Guide

 

Overview

Yol Gorge (Yolyn Am) is one of Mongolia’s most striking natural wonders, located within the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Famous for its dramatic cliffs, year‑round ice formations, and rare wildlife, it offers a unique blend of desert and alpine scenery. The gorge is named after the Yol, or lammergeier vulture, a majestic bird that soars high above the valley.

Location & Access

• Situated in the Züün Saikhan Mountains, Umnugovi province.

• Approximately 56 km from Dalanzadgad, the provincial capital.

• Accessible by jeep tours, guided excursions, or private vehicles.

Natural Features

• Elevation: 2,200–2,800 meters above sea level.

• Narrow gorge stretching about 8 km, with sections so tight only two people can pass side by side.

• Stream at the base freezes in winter, forming thick ice fields that last until mid‑summer.

• Cliffs rich in juniper and alpine vegetation, alongside diverse plant species.

Wildlife

• Lammergeier (Yol): Mongolia’s largest bird, wingspan 2–2.5 m, soaring up to 4,000 m.

• Other species: Siberian ibex, Argali wild sheep, lynxes, wolves, snow leopards, gazelles, and foxes.

• Protected since 1965 as part of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park.

• Expanded in 1993 to include Khongor Sand Dunes and fossil sites.

• Climate change has shortened the lifespan of the gorge’s ice fields, which now melt by late July.
