Overview

Bayanzag, also known as the Flaming Cliffs, is a striking formation of red sandstone located in Bulgan sum, Umnugovi province. The name “Bayanzag” comes from the saxaul tree, a hardy desert plant with coarse wood and spongy bark. The cliffs are world‑famous for their fiery glow at sunset and their extraordinary paleontological discoveries.

History & Paleontology

In 1922, American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews led an expedition here and discovered the first dinosaur eggs ever found in the world, along with hundreds of skeletons of species such as Protoceratops and Velociraptor.
These discoveries placed Mongolia at the center of global paleontology and earned Bayanzag its reputation as one of the most important fossil sites on Earth.
The expedition was halted due to harsh sandstorms, but its findings remain legendary.
