Tsagaan Sar – Mongolia’s Lunar New Year

Every February, Mongolia bursts into celebration with Tsagaan Sar, the Lunar New Year and the country’s most cherished traditional holiday. Rooted in the ancient Mongolian lunisolar calendar, Tsagaan Sar is more than just the start of a new year — it is a joyful reunion of families, a symbol of survival through the harsh winter, and a heartfelt welcome to the warmth of spring.

For nomadic herders, winter is a season of endurance, caring for livestock through snowstorms and bitter cold. As the days grow longer and brighter, Tsagaan Sar arrives as a festival of hope, marking the triumph over winter and the promise of renewal.

The Celebration

The festivities can last for weeks, but the most important days are:

• Bituun (New Year’s Eve): Families clean their homes, prepare lavish meals, and make offerings to welcome the year. According to Buddhist tradition, the Baldan Lkham deity visits every household, so offerings of food and ice are placed outside for her and her horse.

• Shiniin Negen (First Day): The new year begins with visits to elders, who host younger relatives.

• Shiniin Hoyor & Shiniin Gurvan (Second & Third Days): Families continue visiting relatives, strengthening bonds and honoring traditions.

Customs & Traditions

• Zolguut Greeting: Visitors greet elders by holding their elbows and asking, “Amar baina uu?” (“Are you living in peace?”). Elders reply “Amar” and often give a gentle kiss on the cheek.

• Khadag Exchange: A long blue ceremonial scarf is offered as a sign of respect.

• Festive Table: Homes overflow with traditional dishes — dumplings, steamed sheep back, rice curds, yogurt, distilled vodka, and fermented mare’s milk.

• Gift-Giving: Hosts present gifts to guests, especially children, symbolizing prosperity and goodwill for the year ahead.
