Orog lake lies just in the northern side of Ikh Bogd, the highest peak of  Gobi-Altai mountain range.

Orog lake is located about 100 km south of the Bayankhongor city.
in the past the lake used to dry up and it's status as a premier wetland came into doubt, however, the UNDP recently supported the Tuin river sustainable land management program. This program's aim was to plant saxaul, caragana, elms, some fruit trees and Glycyrrhiza (sweet grass) in order to decrease desertification in the area. The program has been successful.  Travelling up Ikh Bogd the morning after camping at Orog Lake will provide great sunrise views of Bayankhongor.
