Overview

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, located in the far west of Mongolia in Bayan‑Ulgii province, is one of the country’s most stunning natural reserves. The park features snow‑capped mountains, pristine lakes, lush valleys, and glaciers, making it a paradise for adventurers and nature lovers. It is divided into two main regions: the Tavan Bogd Mountains in the northwest and the Lakes Region in the southeast.

Natural Features

  • Tavan Bogd Mountains: The highest mountains in Mongolia, dominated by Khuiten Uul (Cold Peak) at 4,374 m, permanently snow‑capped and encircling the Potanin Glacier (23 sq. km). Other peaks include Nairamdal (Friendship, 4,180 m), Malchin (Herder, 4,050 m), Bürged (Eagle, 4,068 m), and Olgii (Cradle, 4,050 m).

  • Potanin Glacier: Mongolia’s largest glacier, nestled among the peaks.

  • Lakes Region: Includes three freshwater lakes—Khurgan Nuur, Khoton Nuur, and Dayan Nuur—fed by glacial melt and annual snowfall.

  • Waterfalls (7–10 m high) formed by creeks flowing into the lakes, with a small bridge crossing the channel between Khurgan and Khoton Nuur.
